Nu-disco, aka disco house, is a modernized, trendy version of disco from the '70s and '80s. It's glittery and danceable, with the perfect balance of electronic influence and smooth vocals. I love this genre because it comes in clean, sharp sounds while maintaining that retro, four-on-the-floor beat -- the old mixed with the new. And, because of that vintage X modern combo, it can appeal to any type of music-lover; like Elizabeth Walker says in this IndieShuffle collection, nu-disco is a sound that can "effortlessly speak across music preference borders."
Gorgon City, a London duo that I've been seeing a lot of in Spotify playlists lately, is, in my opinion, starting to popularize that crisp UK garage and nu-disco sound. I've added my current favorites from them: "Here For You" and "Unmissable." If you like Disclosure, Gorgon City is the one for you.
Oliver Nelson's remix of Route 94 and Jess Glynne's hit "My Love" boasts a gorgeous sensuality, with the sound of snaps to create a seriously groovy kick. And Zimmer just released his new single, "Saturday Love," with Pallace -- with a consistent sound based on his growing tropical house collection. While Calvin Harris doesn't fit in the nu-disco category, Big Z did a great job of remixing "Thinking About You," adding in pronounced piano minor chords and a beautiful harp effect, capturing that unexpected yet catchy feel-good vibe.
As you can tell by the title 'Nu-DiscoLove,' the theme in this playlist is in fact love, with a central theme in the lyrics of taking a chance for someone you love, letting loose, and having no fear. #FGF
